January is Get Organized Month

While most are making a New Year resolution to lose weight did you know January is National Get Organized Month?  Yes it is, and do we need it in our lives?  Yes! Yes! Yes!  As a working Mom I can sure use some organization in my life.  But it takes a family to get organized and stay that way.

Make a decision by involving your family in the process.  It’s always a good idea to have a family meeting to set the ground rules and decide where to start or better yet when and how.  A chore chart is an awesome way to involve the family, it includes what needs to be done and who will do it.  If you want an extra push you can offer an incentive for getting the chore done within a timely manner.  But if chores are not done there must be rules in place for the consequences.

Here are some simple steps to follow when getting organized

  1. Get a Calendar with a schedule for cleaning

  2. Declutter---There should be a Donate, Recycle, and Keep Pile and remember the keep pile should not be the largest pile.

  3. Complete one room before moving to the next

  4. If the item has not been used in 6 months most likely it needs to go

  5. Teach your child how to clean properly so there is are no excuses when they are asked to help

By using a schedule to organize each area of the house it will be organized in no time.  The goal is to do each area until the house is complete and I do mean completely done.  By starting with the family room you clean it from top to bottom as well as organize.  The following week you proceed to the next room.  The Dollar Store is a great resource for organizing.
